Masterminded by directeur sportif Johan Bruyneel, US Postal, the worlds most powerful cycling team kept Lance Armstrong from the storm and delivered him victory number four. His dominance was such that it rolled back the years to Merckx and Indurain as the 30 year old Texan comes in sight of their five victories.

This was a fascinating Tour. McEwen's impressive dethroning of six-time green jersey winner Erik Zabel was a highlight, as was the enthralling support for French hero Laurent Jalabert in his final Tour in the polka-dot climbers jersey; and the emotional stage wins by the engaging Columbian Santiago Botero. But perhaps above all else it was the Blue Train of impressive pace making that was the major highlight, with Ekimov, Heras and Hincapie the leading Postal trio. C

oming off back-to-back wins at the Midi Libre and Dauphine Libere, Armstrong`s preparation for this Tour was second to none and by winning the 7km prologue time trial on July 6th he was the man to beat and as a rider he does not make rash decisions to attack when not ready to do so, as eventual Tour runner-up Joseba Beloki did on stage 14 climb to Mont Ventoux. In this Tour Armstrong was going to face the spanish menace. Their confidence pre-Tour was high and when ONCE took stage 4 in the team time-trial and Botero's victory in the stage time-trial it looked as if they might be right, but it was not to be as Beloki admitted 'Simply put, he's the best. He has it all - a strong team, strong physique, a strong head - he can win as long as he wants! Bring on number five!'
